Will you watch a rich guy (most likely a guy) give a poor person money? Can we even count on you for ratings if he's secretly rich and only pretending to be poor so the Fox network can exploit the dream of escaping financial misery on behalf of their (actually the advertisers of their) new show, "The Secret Millionaire"?
Not that this show's reality (?) likely to be fixed or anything, but won't the poor people notice the production crews walking around behind the rich-pretend-poor guy and (maybe) begin to suspect something might be up? It's not like being poor makes you incapable of sniffing out secrets.
Is someone keeping a secret if they don't feel it is necessary to brag about what they do? That is the question to be answered after having finished "The Billionaire Who Wasn't," the tale of how Charles Feeney managed to make a great deal of money outside the glare of publicity ... and how he was able to donate it to charity in much the same way. His secret life probably never would have been revealed if only his firm, DFS, had been able to stay out of court. But, as with almost every secret, even the best of intentions with the best of results is unlikely to stay secret forever.
It is true, if rarely so, that someone gets the timing optimal for keeping and then revealing a secret. One who did was Larry Stewart, a wealthy man who kept his Christmas giving secret for years and who told the story of his anonymous generosity shortly before his death to inspire others.
